Background-
The UN Human Rights Council’s 62nd session saw every member back Saudi Arabia’s resolution on empowering women in cybersecurity, a decision that drew praise from the Muslim World League and other Islamic organizations.
The Muslim World League and other Islamic organizations welcomed the outcome. It builds on the Women Empowerment in Cybersecurity initiative, launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman back in 2020.
The Kingdom’s Permanent Mission to the UN and international organizations in Geneva introduced the resolution, seeking to widen professional and skills-building opportunities for women in cybersecurity worldwide.
Speaking before the council, Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Abdulmohsen bin Khothaila, said the initiative shows the Kingdom’s commitment to building stronger international cooperation, offering technical support, and backing capacity-building work worldwide.
Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, Secretary-General of the Muslim World League and President of the Organization of Muslim Scholars, welcomed the council’s decision on behalf of both the Muslim World League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
Both groups said they take pride in the leading role Saudi Arabia plays in supporting global efforts to build a safer, more inclusive cyberspace, Al-Issa noted in a statement.
The resolution reflects Saudi Arabia’s continued effort to open more doors for women in technology while building stronger global ties on cybersecurity issues.
Officials from the Kingdom continue to frame the initiative as part of a larger drive toward inclusive growth in the digital sector, aimed at building skills and expanding professional participation for women in the field on a global scale.
