Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais Makes History as First Woman to Lead UN Tourism

Background: 

In a historic milestone for the United Arab Emirates and the global travel sector, Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais has been appointed as the first woman to head the United Nations Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) in its 50-year history.  

The nomination was confirmed during the 123rd UN Tourism Executive Council session in Segovia, Spain, where she won a majority vote. Following ratification by the UN General Assembly, she is set to officially assume office in January 2026 for a four-year term. 

This appointment breaks a 50-year barrier, making history for both Al Nowais and the UAE. Her confirmation was celebrated across the country as a sign of the UAE’s commitment to Vision 2040, especially in promoting women’s empowerment and global leadership.  

President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan welcomed the appointment, saying it shows the UAE’s support for Emirati women in leadership roles Al Nowais dedicated this achievement to the UAE leadership and to Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, acknowledging her as a lifelong advocate for Emirati and Arab women. 

Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais brings over 16 years of international business and leadership experience to her new role. She has worked in key private sector positions, supporting women, youth, and sustainable development, giving her the skills to lead the UN Tourism Organization in a changing world. 

 Her appointment is seen as a step forward, encouraging young people, especially women, to take on leadership roles with purpose and dedication.
