Background

Three Emirati sisters are changing the world of modest fashion with their brand Takara. They give the traditional abaya a fresh style and self-expression. Athari, Mariam, and Jawaher AlHajri, the founders, started Takara in 2020 to show that modesty can be both modern and creative.

“Many people think modest fashion is simple or restrictive,” says Mariam AlHajri. “But we believe it can be elegant, expressive, and full of character.”

Each sister plays a unique role in the creative process. Athari focuses on fine details and structure. Mariam designs the style and flow of the clothes. Jawaher guides the brand’s visual look. Together, the sisters unite their talents and come up with artful and wearable designs.

Takara, the brand name, is a Japanese word that means “treasure.” The sisters consider the products that they make and also their relationship as ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌treasures. “Some clients are still wearing pieces from our 2020 collection,” Mariam adds. “It’s proof that our designs are built to last.”

Takara’s approach goes against fast fashion trends, focusing instead on quality and lasting value. “We have clients who continue to wear items from our 2020 collection,” Mariam notes. “That shows our designs are made to last.”

Their latest collection, “Unveiling,” captures Takara’s spirit, simple, graceful, and inspired by culture. Shot in a Japanese-style villa in Bali, it highlights the brand’s belief that modest fashion can be global and timeless.

Through Takara, the AlHajri sisters are turning the abaya into more than clothing, a symbol of heritage, confidence and modern womanhood.
