Background
Dr Wafa Al Shamsi has won the Sharjah Award for Gulf Women’s Creativity in the field of literary studies, expressing gratitude for the recognition alongside a distinguished group of women from across the Arab world.
Al Shamsi thanked Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, for her patronage and continued support for women’s creative talents across the Gulf region and the Arab world.
Speaking to Sharjah24, Al Shamsi said research and critical studies require significant attention and institutional backing. She noted that the award’s annual focus on literary studies provides that encouragement, helping strengthen the presence of female critics, writers and researchers capable of producing in-depth critical analyses of literature.
Al Shamsi also praised the Cultural Office of the Sharjah Family and Community Council for its efforts in making each edition of the award a distinctive occasion that recognises outstanding women from across the Gulf and the wider Arab world.
She said the Emirate of Sharjah has made culture a defining identity, knowledge a mission, and the nurturing of creativity a deeply rooted institutional approach. This, she added, gives the honour special significance, as Sharjah celebrates not only achievements but also the dedication and years of commitment that precede the moment of recognition.
The award continues to spotlight women making meaningful contributions to literature, research and the cultural landscape across the Arab world.
