Background:

Every weekend in Alkhobar, women come together to paint, relax, and connect through art at Salam, which means ‘Peace’ in Arabic. The workshop was started by 25-year-old Hend Al-Mousa to give women a space to express themselves and feel calm.

Held at a small studio, the sessions welcome women of all ages. Participation is open to the public, with registration available through Instagram and a small fee that covers materials and refreshments.

Al-Mousa said she wanted to create a place where everyone can feel calm, be themselves, and express their feelings freely. She described Salam as a safe and welcoming space for all.

Each month, Al-Mousa chooses a new theme based on her experiences or the seasons. She keeps it a secret until the month begins, so everyone can enjoy it. Over time, the sessions have become more than just art classes, with many women returning regularly, making friends, and supporting each other.

“Some come in shy and quiet, but after a few sessions, they open up and start sharing stories about their lives,” Al-Mousa said. “Every month is different, new details, new energy, new people. Through diversity and renewal, we stay creative.”

Since starting in September 2025, Salam has drawn a loyal group of artists, students, and professionals. Participants say the workshop is relaxing, inspiring, and calming.

Ghala Al-Hussaini, 17, said the workshop helped her feel relaxed and focused. Jana Al-Amri, 17, described it as a women-only, autumn-themed session with warm colors and professional photos, where she felt completely immersed. Mashael Al-Harbi, 29, said it eased her stress and made her enjoy painting again, and she plans to return. Saja Al-Ateeq, 32, added that everything was well-prepared, the tools were available, and the calm, beautiful setting made the experience enjoyable.
