Sahara Energy and EEG Team Up to Plant 100 Mangrove Trees in Umm Al Quwain

Prime Highlights

  • Sahara Energy Resources DMCC engaged in Emirates Environmental Group in the planting of 100 mangroves in Umm Al Quwain.
  • The initiative enhances UAE’s green vision and facilitates biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and coastal protection.

Key Facts

  • 100 mangrove trees have the ability to absorb around 25 tons of CO₂ yearly, complementing the efforts of climate mitigation.
  • The trees also act as natural nurseries for over 80% of sea animals, contributing to the protection of UAE coastal ecosystems.

Key Background

One of its top commitments towards climate sustainability, Sahara Energy Resources DMCC of the Sahara Group partnered with Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) in the planting of 100 saplings of mangrove local species on the coast of Umm Al Quwain. All this is just part of the UAE overall action of climate action and sustainability according to the Net Zero 2050 strategy.

The tree-planting program is an exhibition of Sahara Energy’s unwavering commitment to being a good bet in climate solutions. Sahara Energy General Manager of Business Development, Idowu Ogunkanmi, reaffirmed that everyone’s hands are on deck to address the issues of the climate. In addressing issues such as sea-level rise, heat waves, and loss of biodiversity, the program is a standard for placing business organizations at the forefront of environmental protection.

Mangrove forests store huge quantities of carbon. The 100 trees will store about 25 tons of CO₂ and its equivalents per year from the air. In addition to climate change mitigation, mangroves are also natural sea walls that defend against erosion and storm surges. Mangroves provide nurseries for a healthy marine ecosystem that enhances fish spawning and diversity along UAE coastlines.

EEG’s Mariella Gaspar echoed the importance of Sahara Energy’s initiative, deeming their pledge a beacon of hope and optimism amidst environmental setbacks. EEG undertook this endeavor in its sustained “For Our Emirates We Plant” campaign encouraging corporate and public sector participation in UAE greening efforts.

Sahara Group Corporate Communications Director Bethel Obioma revealed this under its global environmental and social development strategy through business in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. According to him, Sahara Group will continue investing in green projects as well as individuals’ well-being.”.

The project comes at the right time, consistent with measures by the nation such as sowing millions of mangroves by Abu Dhabi through the National Carbon Sequestration Project, complementing the climate leadership by the UAE.
