Background-
Kuwait has intensified coordinated government action to strengthen its position in the World Bank’s Women, Business and the Law Index, Minister of Social Affairs, Family and Childhood Affairs and Chairperson of the Women’s Affairs Committee Dr Amthal Al-Huwailah announced at the opening of a dedicated workshop attended by committee members and representatives from relevant government bodies.
The minister noted that the committee is working closely with concerned authorities to review the index requirements, set priorities and move forward necessary amendments ahead of the evaluation scheduled for October.
Al-Huwailah highlighted that the index carries significance beyond the World Bank ranking, tying into international commitments such as the Beijing Platform for Action, the Global Gender Gap Index and the Sustainable Development Goals. Stronger performance in these areas, she said, reflects Kuwait’s continued progress in empowering women and expanding their role across society and the economy.
Each government body now holds a tailored list of proposed amendments, with faster measures like decisions, regulations and administrative procedures moving first, ahead of longer-term legislative reforms. The minister pressed for ongoing cooperation among government bodies to sustain the momentum before the upcoming evaluation.
Al-Huwailah also went to the Social Welfare Complex in Sulaibikhat, touring the women’s and children’s rehabilitation departments to assess service quality and facility readiness.
The minister pointed to the push to lift care standards, boost operational performance and ensure facilities stay well equipped to support residents and children.
Affiliated care homes, she confirmed, will keep undergoing regular inspections, backing up service quality and responsiveness for beneficiaries. During the tour, Al-Huwailah assessed residents’ health and wellbeing and received updates covering rehabilitation programs and care plans.
