Key Background:
On Emirati Women’s Day, Aysha Ali Ahmed Al Mahri, CEO of Burjeel Holdings’ healthcare operations in Al Ain, spoke about her journey from starting out as a nurse to becoming a leading figure in the nation’s healthcare sector.
Aysha started her career in 1997 after earning a nursing diploma from the Ministry of Health. At that time, few Emiratis worked in nursing, and she felt uncertain. She said that a lot of young colleagues are having these kinds of doubts, though she says to them to believe in themselves and use all the opportunities they get.
This leadership style that she has developed revolves around empathy, problem-solving, and practical patient care, which was shaped by her initial experience as a nurse. This set of skills saw her rise to senior roles, such as Chief Nursing Officer at Al Jalila Children’s Specialty Hospital and Group CNO at Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA). During her employment, she was among the best students to graduate from the University of Sharjah and also attained two masters in healthcare management and health economics.
Aysha’s work has also gained international recognition. In 2023, she reached a milestone by becoming the first non-US candidate to be awarded a fellowship by the American College of Health Data Management. That same year, she also became the first Emirati to be honored with Senior Fellow status at TruMerit, a global organization for healthcare leaders. That same year, she joined Burjeel Holdings, first as Group CNO, then as Deputy CEO of Burjeel Medical City.
She is now the CEO of healthcare services in Al Ain, where she focuses on growing cancer treatment facilities, improving surgical care, and building collaborations with international partners like Ohio State University.
Aysha said that her Emirati identity allows her to relate to patients more closely. She encouraged others to take pride in their culture and stay close to people who inspire and support them.
