Background-
NAMA Women Advancement Establishment, working with PwC Middle East, has released a new report examining what helps Emirati women build and advance their careers in Sharjah’s private sector, along with practical steps employers can take to improve retention and career growth.
Titled “Understanding the Perspectives of Emirati Women of Sharjah on the Emirate’s Private Sector,” the report draws on a survey of 691 Emirati women, along with focus groups and discussions with policymakers, employers and HR leaders. As more Emirati women join the UAE private sector, the research looks at how to turn that growth into lasting careers and stronger paths to leadership.
The survey found 62 percent of respondents favour hybrid working arrangements, while working hours and compensation rank among the top factors shaping career decisions, cited by 76 percent and 73 percent respectively. It also found 41 percent of respondents have stayed with their current employer for one to four years, while a third have stayed more than five years.
Mariam Al Hammadi, Director General of NAMA Women Advancement, said the progress made by Emirati women in the workforce provides a strong foundation, adding that the next step is ensuring women have real opportunities to develop, advance and lead.
Khaled Bin Braik, UAE Country Senior Partner at PwC Middle East, said organisations that focus on progression, flexibility and family support will be best placed to attract and retain future Emirati leaders. The study outlines seven priority areas for employers, including clearer career paths, mentorship and greater workplace flexibility.
